SUCH was the high standard of food at this place that I’d recommend it to anyone.

With one exception: those who suffer from any sort of obsessive behaviour disorder.

There are some who might suggest that I fall into that category but – touch wood – I don’t.

It’s simply that I like cutlery to be arranged neatly on the table.

Here, though, the degree of perfection I crave proved impossible to achieve for the two knives that lay in front of me were, as bizarre as this might sound, magnetised.

So they spookily spun one towards the other each time I sought to align them.

Happily, the standard of bread brought to our table by a commendably friendly and efficient waiter was enough to distract me.

And my fretting faded further when my starter arrived.

I’d chosen sashimi from a menu dominated by modern British classics – a presumptuous dish for a non-Japanese kitchen to attempt, I thought.

Any misgivings disappeared rapidly.

Thin slices of salmon, scallop and cod were wonderfully fresh and flavoursome.

In the middle sat a pile of oily, ozone-rich seaweed punctuated with slightly peppery micro-leaves.

Little dots of wasabi added oomph and a pot of soy sauce provided seasoning.

My only quibble was the lack of pickled ginger promised on the menu: it adds texture and mouth-cleansing freshness.

Lynn’s crab and caviar risotto drew mumbles of appreciation.

Likewise I was delighted by my choice of main course – half a dozen plump scallops seared perfectly so they retained bite but retained their moist sweetness.

They came with a wild garlic risotto with that was both soothing but slightly pungent and thin slices of feisty chorizo. Read full story here...
